In recent years, backpacking has gained popularity, offering the freedom to plan trips however you like—with fun to be found in every detail. Especially among the many accommodation options, unexpected experiences often await. Recently, in Australia, there was an old prison from the 19th century that has been renovated into a youth hostel. In addition to revitalizing the former prison space, it also preserved historical traces of the jail, offering guests a one-of-a-kind “imprisonment” experience.

The Fremantle Prison YHA, which officially opened in 2015, was converted from the Fremantle Prison—a well-known World Heritage Site in the area. During the 19th century, it housed over 350,000 prisoners, most of whom were incarcerated for offenses such as drunkenness, prostitution, or causing disturbances in public.

The Fremantle Prison is located in the urban area of Fremantle, covering 14 hectares. After being decommissioned, the site was previously planned as a cultural heritage attraction for tourists, featuring galleries, museums, and a conference center. Now, this once-notorious facility has been transformed into a youth hostel. The formerly gloomy cells have been painted in fresh, vibrant colors, and the hammocks inside have been replaced with soft, comfortable beds and carpets. Even the outdoor concrete exercise yards where prisoners once got fresh air have been turned into well-manicured lawns, allowing guests to comfortably lounge in the sun. Additionally, the hostel includes an open kitchen and a bar where travelers from around the world can interact and socialize.
