The name Mugucuoyu comes from the Taroko language, meaning a beautiful paradise. Its mysterious natural beauty has made it one of the must-visit spots in Hualien. In the past, during holidays, large numbers of buses would enter the mountains, with narrow roads crowded with tourist coaches, which often caused dissatisfaction among local tribal residents. Since July 2014, due to the impact of Typhoon Rammasun, landslides occurred on the roads leading to the area, causing severe damage to the mountainous roads, leading to a halt in tourism traffic.
After eleven months of requests from tourism operators, the Hualien County Government announced on June 4th the reopening of the collapsed section of the Mugucuoyu Ecological Corridor (Provincial Highway 14B).Only those applying for entry for hiking or fitness purposes are permitted, while general vehicle access remains prohibited.It should be noted that due to exposed strata and the impact of open-cut tunnel construction, there are still safety concerns regarding passage. The Hualien County Government also advises applicants to consider whether their visit is truly necessary.
