Glowworm Cave is the most popular of the Waitomo Caves, attracting around 500,000 visitors annually. The cave boasts an abundance of stalactites, stalagmites, and a unique spectacle formed by glowworms, offering an underground experience akin to gazing at stars twinkling in the night sky. Exploring Glowworm Cave takes about 45 minutes. The highlights of the tour include walking, taking a boat ride, and then walking again, with the glowworm section lasting approximately ten minutes.

The glowworms that illuminate the cave’s darkness do so to attract prey. They are a species unique to New Zealand, with each insect colony potentially comprising several million individuals.
