Complete ban: Disney says no to selfie sticks

Walt Disney Company in the United States recently announced that to ensure the safety of guests and performers, selfie sticks will be banned at all Disney theme parks worldwide. Starting June 30, the ban will first take effect at Disneyland in Florida and California, followed by Hong Kong and Paris Disneylands starting July 1. The enforcement date for Tokyo Disneyland has not yet been announced.

Unlike previous policies where selfie sticks were only prohibited on certain rides, this time, due to safety concerns, Disney has officially expanded the ban, prohibiting the entry of selfie sticks into the parks altogether. Disney staff will check for selfie sticks at park entrances and ask guests carrying them to store them in lockers. Additionally, clear warning signs will be posted at Disney hotels and parking lots to remind visitors not to bring selfie sticks.

Selfie sticks are banned during peak travel seasons, including major events like Christmas and New Year, as well as at popular celebration sites such as Sentosa, Marina Bay, National Stadium, and Zouk Club. Concerns over overcrowding and obstructing others’ views contribute to the ban, and inspections are also arranged to prevent guests from sneaking them in.
◎ South Korea
A ban on the sale of selfie sticks has been enacted—for example, “selling unapproved selfie sticks can result in fines of up to 30 million KRW (approximately NT$840,000) or even three years in prison.” The South Korean government stated that selfie sticks are classified as communication devices capable of connecting two different devices via radio waves, requiring testing to confirm they do not interfere with other devices using the same frequencies.
