To make cross-strait travel more convenient for Taiwanese tourists, mainland China officially implemented a visa-free policy for Taiwan visitors starting July 1, and from July 6, Taiwanese tourists can apply for electronic Taiwan Compatriot Permits at designated windows. Meanwhile, the current booklet-style Taiwan Compatriot Permit has begun to stop accepting applications.

The Ministry of Public Security of China, in order to further facilitate cross-strait travel for Taiwanese tourists, starting7from6, entry and exit management departments of public security organs in Fujian Province and entry and exit administration agencies of the Ministry of Public Security commissioned Hong Kong and Macao-based document service units to start accepting applications for electronic Taiwan Compatriot Permits, while also ceasing to accept applications for the current booklet-style Taiwan Compatriot Permits. The electronic Taiwan Compatriot Permit is designed and produced in accordance with international standards for electronic card-type travel documents. In addition to eliminating the endorsement section, it contains an embedded secure smart chip that allows automatic inspection and verification by entry and exit information systems, while also enhancing security and anti-counterfeiting features. Furthermore, the numbering system for the electronic Taiwan Compatriot Permit continues to follow the “one person, one number, lifelong unchanged” rule, using an8-digit personal lifelong number. Taiwanese residents who have previously applied for a5-year valid Taiwan Compatriot Permit will retain the same permit number when exchanging for an electronic version.
