The number of passengers at Taoyuan Airport has increased significantly. According to statistics, the total number of inbound and outbound passengers will exceed 40 million in 2015, far surpassing the current capacity. The planned third terminal is not expected to be completed until 2020 and will not be able to relieve current demand in the short term. Therefore, Taoyuan Airport plans to build a smaller fourth terminal as an emergency solution, which could be completed as early as 2018.

The annual capacity of the first and second terminals is 32 million passengers, but in 2014, passenger volume at Taoyuan Airport already exceeded 35 million, and this year it is expected to surpass 40 million. Many passengers have experienced long queues during immigration, complaining about the congestion. According to estimates by Taoyuan Airport, with the current annual passenger growth rate of 10%, the volume is expected to reach 50 million by 2020. Therefore, expansion and construction are imperative.

The third terminal, with an annual capacity of 45 million passengers, is expected to be completed and operational in 2020.Therefore, Taoyuan Airport has decided to proceed with the construction of a smaller smart terminal (the fourth terminal) in the meantime. This terminal will feature a self-service check-in system and full computerization to reduce waiting times and staffing costs. Lighting and air conditioning will also adjust automatically based on passenger volume. It is expected to officially open in July or August 2018. The terminal will be located directly above the Airport MRT’s A12 station, offering great convenience.
