Six years on – The Alishan Forest Railway is fully operational again

The Alishan Forest Railway had been suspended since Typhoon Morakot in 2009, but after more than six years of restoration and reconstruction, a test run between Chiayi North Gate Station and Alishan Station was successfully conducted on the 15th. The Chiayi Forest Management Office has set a target to officially reopen the line on December 25.

The Alishan Forest Railway has long been a favorite among both domestic and international tourists. The route from Chiayi Station to Alishan Station offers constant views of forested beauty along the way, spanning a total length of 71.4 kilometers. The section between Zhushan and Fenchihu was damaged by heavy rain in 2008 and further devastated by Typhoon Morakot in 2009, leading to the suspension of the Alishan Forest Railway. In January last year, the Zhushan to Fenchihu section reopened, followed by the completion of sections such as the main line from Fenchihu to Alishan, the "Pingzhenana" Tunnel, and the "Duolin Tunnel."

After being suspended for over six years, in addition to a full review, adjustment, and testing of the railway sections originally damaged by disasters, train crews—both old and new—must also undergo rigorous training to familiarize themselves with the routes and conditions. Only once everything is confirmed can the line officially resume service.The Forestry Bureau and Taiwan Railways have set a goal to achieve full reopening by December 25 at the end of the year.

Affected by Typhoon Dujuan, two major hazards were discovered on the yet-to-be-opened 58K section of the Alishan Forest Railway.As a result, the original target of achieving full line operation by December 25, 2015, could not be met due to the impact of Typhoon Dujuan.The Chiayi Forest District Office under the Forestry Bureau will soon assess the feasibility of extending the line from Fenchihu Station to Shizi Road Station, with a car transfer to follow. The distance is about 10 kilometers, taking approximately 25 minutes by vehicle.
