Tainan Rural Art Museum Opens with New Jimmy Liao Works on Display

The 2015 Tuzi Gou Rural Art Museum officially opened on October 3. With the concept of “the village is the art museum, and the art museum is the village,” this year features as many as 22 creative works on display. In addition to large-scale artworks made from recycled materials by several young artists, such as “Attack of the Giant Farmer” and “Iron Robot,” new works by Jimmy Liao have also made their debut.

With the philosophy of “the village is the art museum, and the art museum is the village!” for over a decade, Tuzi Gou Village has tried to use art as a direction for community development. In the past, it started with the presence of Tainan National University of the Arts in Tuzi Gou, turning the entire village space into an exhibition venue—rice fields as canvases, agricultural products as artworks, and farmers as artists. Whether it’s village houses, warehouses, or farmsteads, everything becomes part of the exhibit. After 10 years of community development and revitalization, the Tuzi Gou Rural Art Museum has successfully gained fame and become an annual highlight for the rural area.

The Tuzi Gou Rural Art Museum uses the rural area as its unit, rotating exhibits with the seasons, and every villager serves as a volunteer. It aims to transform “hardworking farmers into elegant farmers,” while exploring another possibility of integrating art with rural management. This year’s 22 works include the “Bixilijian Creative Workshop” print exhibition jointly created by Shuren Elementary School and Jimmy Liao, as well as rich works by young artists such as “Rainbow Rain in the Countryside” and “Attack of the Giant Farmer.”
