With the crisp autumn air upon us, the lotus flowers at Kaohsiung’s Lotus Pond are in full bloom, and the most eye-catching among them are the giant water lilies with leaves over 1 meter in diameter. The Kaohsiung City Government Tourism Bureau has successfully cultivated these Amazonian giants, the world’s largest species of lotus, which feature sturdy lateral roots. Their leaf pads can support weights of 50 to 70 kilograms. When the giant water lily leaves spread out like natural trays on the water’s surface, it’s the perfect time for an autumn outing—come take a dip and experience the “floating-on-water” sensation while snapping some memorable photos.

Under the careful cultivation of the tourism bureau, the giant water lily leaves have now grown to over 1 meter in diameter and have even begun to bloom beautifully. Recently, the lily pond has attracted many visitors eager to catch a glimpse of the impressive leaf size. The “giant water lily,” a member of the water lily family, is renowned for its massive, disk-like leaves, varied flower colors, and rich fragrance. The leaves float on the water’s surface, reaching diameters of 1 to 3 meters, with upturned edges that stand 7–10 centimeters high. Most remarkably, the leaf pads can support the weight of three children (50–70 kg), making for a truly fun experience.

The giant water lilies are expected to enter dormancy in November, with their leaves gradually withering away. The tourism bureau encourages everyone to visit and admire the lotuses while you still can. Starting now and running through the end of October, kindergarten groups in Kaohsiung can apply to let their children experience riding on the leaves. Interested kindergartens can contact the Lotus Pond Management Station of the Tourism Bureau (Phone: 07-5883242) to sign up. Riding sessions are available every Tuesday and Thursday from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM until the end of October—don’t miss out on this unique opportunity!
