Another twin typhoon formation alert: This year’s 24th typhoon “Koppu” and 25th typhoon “Champi” have formed one after another. A tropical depression in the Pacific intensified into a mild typhoon “Champi,” designated as No. 25, at 2 a.m. on the 14th, moving northwest to west at a speed of 20 kilometers per hour. It is estimated to have minimal impact on Taiwan.

Meanwhile, another typhoon “Koppu,” No. 24, which formed on the 13th, is relatively closer to Taiwan. Currently moving westward at 23 kilometers per hour, it is predicted to trend northward. Whether it will affect Taiwan depends on the angle of its northward turn, with this weekend being the critical time frame. In addition, meteorologist Wu Der-rong stated that Typhoon Koppu may intensify to near super typhoon strength.

The likelihood of Typhoon Koppu hitting Taiwan has increased. The Central Weather Bureau estimates that Koppu will strengthen to a moderate typhoon within today and tomorrow, and its outer circulation will also impact Taiwan. There is currently a high probability that the typhoon will turn northward, and the degree of that turn will directly affect the extent of its impact on Taiwan.

Moderate Typhoon Koppu made landfall on Luzon Island in the Philippines on the morning of the 18th and is expected to stall there for 2–3 days, weakening from a strong typhoon to a moderate one. It may continue to weaken further into a mild typhoon. The timing and path of its impact on Taiwan can only be accurately estimated once it leaves the Philippines and sea weather conditions stabilize. Currently, it is projected to head north and affect Taiwan, but the exact landfall path remains to be determined. The most significant impact on Taiwan is expected around the 22nd and 23rd.

The weather bureau stated that whether or not the typhoon makes landfall in Taiwan, the combination of the typhoon and the northeast monsoon will inevitably bring rainfall to the northern and eastern parts of the island. Affected by the northeast monsoon, the weather over the next few days will also become unstable, with a higher chance of rain and strong winds. Morning and evening temperatures will also be cooler. Remember to carry rain gear when going out, avoid visiting the seaside, and take precautions against the typhoon.
