Newly opened！Kaohsiung’s ultra-retro barbershop that doesn’t cut hair — just sells “ice”

A quirky little shop has recently popped up in Kaohsiung. At first glance, it looks like a cozy, vintage-style barbershop. But when you approach the counter girl to choose your favorite “stylist,” you’re unexpectedly served different flavors of ice treats instead. It turns out this so-called barbershop is actually a creative ice shop. Here, there’s no hair cutting, no shampooing, not even any real stylists — just vibrantly colored shaved ice.

Nanhai Barbershop Holiday Ice Shop is located on Nanhai Street in Kaohsiung and was created by the same team behind the neighboring Le Jia Breakfast. It had a low-key opening on February 25. The whole store is painted light blue, with big bold letters reading “Nanhai Barbershop.” Inside, a Tiffany green vintage barber chair sits inside a large glass display window, and a white door features a huge Chinese character “純” (pure). At first glance, it really looks like a genuine barbershop — but it's actually an ice shop styled like one.

As a child, the owner’s grandmother ran a barbershop. By blending memories of a childhood roadside ice shop with his grandmother’s old barbershop, the nostalgic Nanhai Barbershop was born.
▲ Going to the counter and “ordering a stylist” from the shampoo girl doesn’t get you a haircut or shampoo — instead, you get a uniquely designed shaved ice, referred to as the stylist’s creation.
When you walk up to the counter and order from the shampoo girl, the shop offers four creative ice flavors, each named after a hairstylist — and each representing their “signature work.” Nana is matcha flavor, Barbie is strawberry, Anthony is tiramisu, and Yuki is kiwi. Prices are either 140 or 180 New Taiwan dollars.

The order number you receive after placing your order is actually an old-fashioned “Rat Card” (Chinese zodiac card), once popular in southern Taiwan — super retro. Nanhai Barbershop does not have indoor seating. Most guests take their ice and head straight to the patio of the neighboring Le Jia Breakfast to enjoy it.
All four flavors of shaved ice come topped with a thick layer of cheese sauce — another signature element here. This uniquely themed barbershop ice shop is only open on weekends and national holidays, so be sure to come at the right time!
▲ The name “Nanhai” not only refers to its location on Nanhai Road, but also carries the meaning of visiting a barbershop where boys transform into men.
