Travel time and JR Shinkansen ticket prices from Tokyo to Hokkaido revealed — just 4 hours
Traveling across Japan just got easier. Hokkaido Railway Company has announced that the “Hokkaido Shinkansen” will officially open on March 26, 2016. In the future, travelers will be able to reach Hokkaido from Tokyo in just 4 hours, and the ticket prices have already been released. Those planning to visit Japan in 2016 can start mapping out their trip from Tokyo all the way to Hakodate in Hokkaido.

The Hokkaido Shinkansen connects the terminal station of the Tohoku Shinkansen, “Shin-Aomori Station,” with “Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station” in Hokkaido’s Hakodate. It uses the E5 series train, which consists of 10 carriages and can accommodate up to 731 passengers. Scheduled to begin service in spring 2016, the line will operate 13 round-trip services per day. Once operational, travel times between key locations such as “Tokyo – Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto” and “Sendai (Tohoku) – Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto” will each be reduced by about one hour—down to just 4 hours and 2.5 hours respectively—greatly improving convenience.

In addition, ticket prices were recently made public. The fare from Tokyo to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto is 22,690 yen (approximately NT$6,135), while the fare from Tokyo to Hakodate is 23,010 yen (approximately NT$6,235).
