When autumn arrives and the temperature begins to drop, maple leaves across Taiwan start to turn red. Alishan, beloved by both domestic and international tourists, begins to see its green maples, Taiwanese trident maples, and Taiwanese red maples gradually change color starting from mid-to-late October. Depending on their individual color-changing timelines, you can enjoy the crimson foliage in Alishan all the way through late December. The scenery along the way—with its greens, yellows, and reds—is breathtaking.

According to the “Alishan Fans Page – Strolling Through the Clouds,” the maple leaves in Alishan mainly consist of three types: green maples, Taiwanese trident maples, and Taiwanese red maples. Based on their color-changing timeline, green maples change from mid-to-late October to mid-November, Taiwanese trident maples from late November to early December, and Taiwanese red maples from early December to late December. Within the Alishan Forest Recreation Area, the main viewing spot for green maples is at the Alishan Hotel, where over 50% have already turned red. Outside the recreation area, green maples are found along Highway 18, from Alishan toward Zizhong—specifically from the 90K to 96K sections—where they line the roadsides. Over 50% of these roadside trees have also turned red. Make the most of your weekend and head to the Alishan Hotel (admission required) or the Highway 18 section between 90K and 95K to admire the maple foliage when the weather is nice.
