Because I’d had enough of hearing about illnesses and attending funerals in my old age, I got the idea to conquer the Appalachian Trail. Even more coincidentally, I set off with an old friend I hadn’t gotten along with in my youth. The English title A Walk in the Woods, translated as “Don’t Mess with the Mountains,” perfectly depicts the anecdotes and humorous moments of two elderly gentlemen hiking through the mountains. With breathtaking scenery along the way, the Appalachian Trail — known as a paradise for hikers — features diverse climates and rich natural ecology. It not only reignites the protagonists’ passion and freedom for life but also allows viewers to enjoy the beauty of nature through the lens.

Robert Redford plays Bill, a travel writer, who teams up with his long-lost and fugitive old friend Katz (played by Nick Nolte) to conquer the Appalachian Trail. Completing this mountain hike in old age is considered an impossible feat, and along the way, they also face competition from younger hikers. Although the two elderly men feel somewhat resentful, they learn to accept their aging bodies and develop self-deprecating humor. Knowing when not to push themselves is also a way to protect their lives, offering the philosophy that “submission brings blessings.”

The conversations between the two elderly men resemble a mature version of “men’s talk” — humorous and entertaining — interspersed with beautiful mountain scenery and perilous paths. This gradually builds an unspoken camaraderie between the two seemingly incompatible and contrasting protagonists. Through each crisis and disagreement, the stunning landscapes ease their friction. Just like in life’s journey, if we can let go of unpleasantness and appreciate the beauty around us, negativity decreases, and positive energy grows stronger. Most importantly, don’t let trivial matters ruin the bigger picture.

Through this journey, the alcoholic Katz overcomes the temptation of alcohol in the face of vast mountain vistas; the character who felt disillusioned with life recalls the warmth of his family and regains inner strength. He becomes more confident, discovers the meaning of life, and finds inspiration. These are all profound insights drawn from life’s path — comparing oneself less with others, setting fewer unnecessary standards, and focusing on how to live well and move forward. The key is not to let minor issues disrupt major milestones.
