The beautiful Pacific island nation of Palau recently announced the establishment of a marine protected area, about the size of Spain. This body of water will be free from any extractive marine activities such as fishing and oil drilling to preserve aquatic ecosystems, aiming to allow marine life to thrive.

Palau has long been beloved by tourists worldwide for its naturally rich island resources. In addition to stunning island scenery, other must-visit spots include Jellyfish Lake and Milk Lake. Recognizing the growing scarcity of marine resources, Palau’s president recently announced that 80% of the country’s waters will be designated as a marine protected area, covering an area of 500,000 square kilometers — the world’s sixth largest. This zone will provide full protection for 1,300 species of fish and 700 types of coral, while the remaining 20% of the sea area will remain open for fishing by locals or small-scale commercial activities.

For a long time, Palau has placed great emphasis on marine conservation. During fish breeding or feeding seasons, certain reef areas are intentionally avoided to give fish space to survive. Now, this measure has been substantially expanded to cover most of Palau’s waters. Government agencies are still finalizing the details of the marine protected area, hoping to turn it into a true ocean paradise.
