As autumn and winter arrive, visiting Alishan not only allows you to admire the romantic red maples but also offers Taiwan’s only winter-exclusive “firefly watching” event. The sight of fireflies—typically associated with spring and summer—dancing under the winter night sky, still glowing with tiny lights, is so breathtaking that it draws crowds of visitors. This has become another major winter attraction in Alishan, alongside the forest railway, ancient tree trails, and the vibrant red foliage.

The “Pristine Snipe Firefly,” visible in Alishan during winter, is not only a different species from the common spring and summer fireflies but also glows in a unique way at night. These fireflies are mainly found along the trails from Fenchihu Railway Station to the Earth God Temple and from Fenchihu to Dadongshan. Visitors can catch a glimpse of the stunning Pristine Snipe Firefly while walking along the circular mountain ecological trail beneath Taiwan fir and cedar forests—making winter an ideal time to witness their beauty.
