A recent online survey asked Taiwanese people about their favorite cities to ring in the new year, ranking the top ten destinations they love to visit during this festive season. The winner, thanks to its convenient transport links, was Hong Kong, followed by Tokyo and New York in second and third place. ● Hong Kong

Just a short two-hour flight from Taiwan, Hong Kong is a highly convenient option for those wanting to celebrate New Year’s Eve overseas. In 2012, Hong Kong was also named one of the world’s top ten unique countdown cities, best known for its dazzling light and fireworks show over Victoria Harbour every year.

● Tokyo

Tokyo has long been one of the most beloved travel destinations for Taiwanese visitors. When celebrating New Year’s Eve in Tokyo, one of the most iconic spots is Tokyo Tower. Climb to the top to take in the city’s sparkling lights that resemble a galaxy, or join the crowd in counting down the numbers on the tower as the new year arrives. Nearby, Zojoji Temple also rings its peace bell 108 times to mark the new year, offering a serene yet celebratory atmosphere.

Celebrating New Year’s Eve in Times Square in New York is considered by many to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The highlight of the night is the countdown, when the giant crystal ball slowly descends from above, followed by a shower of colorful confetti over the cheering crowd — the perfect start to the new year.

In Singapore, Marina Bay is the most vibrant spot for New Year’s celebrations, where stunning fireworks and light shows are set against the backdrop of the eye-catching Marina Bay Sands hotel.

The most famous New Year’s Eve attraction in London is the London Eye. On New Year’s Eve, the London Eye stops operating to prepare for its spectacular fireworks show. Due to the large crowds in previous years, the London government has started charging for tickets to the fireworks, with each ticket costing £10.
