The Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum will begin trial operations at the end of the year. After three years of proposals and efforts, Chiayi County Government’s “Taiwan Tourist Shuttle – Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum Line” has been approved by the Tourism Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications. Starting in March 2016, it will be integrated into the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle network, connecting scenic spots in Chiayi’s mountainous, coastal, and plains areas, making the shuttle service coverage even more comprehensive.

Currently, there are two Taiwan Tourist Shuttle routes in Chiayi, including the “Alishan Line,” which travels along the mountainous Alishan Highway to the forest recreation area, and the “Yanshi Coastal Line,” which serves the coastal towns of Chiayi and Tainan. The third shuttle route operating in the plains area — the “Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum Line” — will be launched in 2016. Subject to successful route rights applications and supporting industry measures, it will officially start in March next year.

The Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum Line draws inspiration from Tokyo’s JR Yamanote Line in Japan, using a loop concept to connect cultural, tourism, and industrial sites across the Chiayi Plains region. The planned stops include:Chiayi HSR Station, Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum, Suan Tou Sugar Refinery, Xingang Ban Tou Community, Fengtian Temple, Minxiong Railway Station, National Chung Cheng University, Songtian Gang, Chiayi Visitor Brewery, Huayi Lifestyle Village in Chiayi City, and Chiayi Railway Station— a total of 11 stations. Passengers can board from either Chiayi HSR Station or Chiayi Railway Station, with at least five departures daily from each. Minxiong Railway Station can serve as a transfer hub, greatly enhancing convenience and accessibility for backpackers.
