The film’s concept originates from the Dutch writer Bjarne Reuter’s short story “De Surprise,” which tells the story of a couple wishing to die and deciding to seek help from a suicide company. But as they spend time together, they fall in love and find it difficult to go through with the plan. The moral of the story is that “only by facing death can you live the fullest life, and everyone should treat each day as if it were their last.” Michael van der Aa said: “This concept inspired me to adapt it into a film using cinematic language. It was originally meant to be my first film, but when I was preparing to shoot, the author Bjarne Reuter had just passed away, causing delays in securing the film rights. It wasn’t until a few years ago, when I contacted his daughter, who was also very willing to have the story made into a film, that this movie came to be.” 【The Unexpected Company】, like 【Character】, is a deeply moving film with a very sincere theme.
