In addition to traditional cultural sites such as ancient temples and shrines, Kyoto, Japan is also home to a renowned railway museum. Currently, Japan is merging the Umekoji Steam Locomotive Museum and the Osaka Transport Science Museum, which will reopen in spring 2016 under a new name — “Kyoto Railway Museum.” At that time, visitors will be able to see over 50 historically significant locomotives and train cars from both museums on display, much to the anticipation of many rail fans.

The newly merged and reopened “Kyoto Railway Museum” will cover an area of 30,000 square meters, showcasing up to 53 locomotives and train cars, making it the Japanese museum with the largest number of trains on display. In addition, the Kyoto Railway Museum has several must-see highlights, including a fan-shaped roundhouse and the conversion of Japan’s oldest surviving wooden train shed from the former Nijo Station into an exhibition hall.
