The Kyoto Lantern Road began in 2003 as a lighting event primarily in the Eastern Hills area. Starting in 2005, the lighting displays were also extended to the Sagano and Arashiyama areas. The illuminated area includes locations radiating outward from Hankyu Arashiyama Station, covering Fudaraku-ji Temple, the Togetsukyo Bridge vicinity, as well as Tenryu-ji Temple, JR Saga-Arashiyama Station, Nison-in Shrine, and Jōjakkō-ji Temple. The Lantern Road event in the Eastern Hills is scheduled for March 12 to March 21, 2016. Travelers planning a trip to the Kyoto area are encouraged to visit during this period to experience the beauty of the illuminated displays.
