2016 Taipei Morning Sunrise Music Festival – Listen to Music and View Container Art During the Holiday

To celebrate Taipei as the 2016 World Design Capital, a series of large-scale events blending international appeal with local characteristics were held. The first to kick off was the 【2016 Taipei Morning Sunrise Music Festival】, which unfolded in the morning light at Dajia Riverside Park on January 1, 2016. The event not only called on citizens to welcome the first rays of sunlight over Taipei’s city skyline in 2016 but also symbolized the official launch of Taipei as the 2016 World Design Capital.

The riverside park is like a green water-friendly belt embracing the city, providing citizens with a diverse and vibrant living space, and has truly become a cross-disciplinary showcase. The “2016 Taipei Morning Sunrise Music Festival” was the highlight of this event. On January 1, greeting the dawn with a creative flag-raising ceremony to mark the first day of the year, the festival continued with a cross-genre musical performance featuring the Taipei Symphony Orchestra and soul diva Jia Jia, as well as the Taipei Chinese Orchestra and rock musician Luan Tan A-Xiang. Blending pop music with classical symphony and traditional Chinese orchestra, it delivered a refreshing new style that immersed the audience in a musical feast.

This event utilized unique container installation art to provide a co-creation space for designers and the public. Inviting celebrities such as Huang Tzu-chiao, Akibo, and Mayday, the containers served as mediums to showcase Taipei’s boundless enthusiasm. They added color to the event venue and sparked conversations, allowing citizens to participate in design firsthand and experience a new design lifestyle.

Taipei’s New Year’s Eve celebrations don’t have to mean crowded spaces — there’s a more creative and artistic way to celebrate too. Reimagining Taipei’s New Year, the eight major cultural and artistic venues extended their opening hours. For example, Taipei International Artist Village and Ximending Red House opened overnight for the first time; the Taipei Fine Arts Museum offered free admission after 5 PM and extended its hours until 8:30 PM; Zhongshan Hall and Spot Taipei screened classic films through the night until 5 AM the next day; the Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei invited the public to pick up brushes for a night of “nocturnal sketching,” creating memorable New Year artworks; Treasure Hill hosted a special night tour; Songshan Cultural and Creative Park featured classic film music talks and midnight soft music performances. With a rich and colorful array of activities, the goal was to offer Taipei residents and visitors a unique New Year holiday experience.
