Stay in an absolutely solitary offshore sea lodge 34 miles from land

If you want to escape the hustle and bustle, besides retreating into the mountains to live as a hermit, another option is to venture away from the mainland and head to the middle of the sea where no one else is around. In North Carolina, USA, there’s a sea lodge called “Frying Pan Tower” that offers just such an experience — allowing guests to stay 34 miles off the coast and enjoy the boundless sea and sky in complete seclusion.

The “Frying Pan Tower” was built in 1964 as a lighthouse, formerly serving as a station for the U.S. Coast Guard as well as a navigational aid for the Frying Pan Shoals area. The entire structure is divided into two levels: the upper lighthouse area and the lower living quarters, along with other facilities like a kitchen, gym, and storage rooms. Later, after the lighthouse became automated, it gradually fell into disuse and was decommissioned in 2004. It wasn’t until 2010 that someone acquired the tower and converted it into a lodge. Guests can access it via helicopter or boat.
