Traveling to Kyoto? There’s a new attraction to explore. Tsutaya Bookstore, once selected as one of the world’s top 20 bookstores, has now opened a branch in Kyoto after establishing locations in Hokkaido and Osaka.

Kyoto Okazaki Tsutaya Bookstore is located right next to Heian Shrine and was reconstructed from the former Kyoto Prefectural Gymnasium. The 100-tsubo space features extensive use of wooden materials, warm-toned lighting, and flooring elements inspired by traditional machiya townhouses—every detail exuding a strong Kyoto vibe. The space is divided into four major themed zones: “Culture,” “History,” “Living” (暮らし), and “Food.” The “Living” section reflects everyday life, allowing visitors to experience Japanese lifestyle and culture from multiple perspectives. The store’s modern architecture also showcases the beauty of Japan’s traditional and artistic heritage to both domestic and international visitors.

In addition to books, the bookstore offers all-day dining, an art gallery, and a café, letting visitors enjoy life’s simple pleasures in a traditional yet charming atmosphere. Bicycle rentals are also available, making it easy for guests to explore Kyoto starting from this hub.
