In response to the significant increase in tourists from South Korea and Taiwan, the Japanese government plans to set up a “pre-arrival immigration inspection” checkpoint at Taiwan’s Taoyuan Airport, a major departure hub for travelers heading to Japan. Passengers will be able to complete immigration procedures in Taiwan before departure. Upon arrival in Japan, they will only need to have their passports scanned, eliminating the need for the longer immigration inspection process, which will greatly reduce entry time. During the face-to-face verification process with inspectors, if fingerprint checks or other methods reveal issues such as unlawful detention in Japan or other reasons that make entry ineligible, individuals will be barred from boarding. If implemented smoothly, this measure is expected to be launched in 2017.
