Traveling to Kenting Without Traffic Jams: Taiwan’s Most Scenic Coastal Road in Pingtung Opens

After nearly 10 years of construction, Pingtung County’s coastal scenic road in Checheng Township has officially opened to traffic. It is expected to alleviate holiday traffic congestion on Highway 26 between Haikou and Fu’an Temple, divert vehicles heading to Kenting, the National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium, Sichongxi, and Hengchun, and could shorten travel times by more than 15 minutes.

The coastal scenic road project in Checheng Township, which took nearly 10 years from 2006 to 2015, has finally opened to traffic under the shared anticipation of the entire Hengchun Peninsula. The new scenic road will boost local recreation, religious tourism, and regional industries, while connecting transportation networks such as the Coastal Highway, Ping’e Highway, and County Highway 199. It aims to balance development between the eastern and western parts of the region. Once the landscape bridge is illuminated, it will also become a new landmark in Checheng.

The scenic road is designed to be 25 meters wide, including 15 meters of roadway, 10 meters of landscaped pedestrian walkway, and a coastal bike path. Once fully open, visitors will be able to travel seamlessly from Haikou in Checheng all the way to Houwan, Guishan, the National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium, Hengchun’s Wanlitong, Hongchakeng, Baisha, and Dapengkeng, linking up the entire west coast of the Hengchun Peninsula and making coastal travel between Checheng and Hengchun more convenient.
