The eruption took place at the Showa Crater, producing a column of ash reaching 2,200 meters high — an impressive sight — prompting the alert level to be raised from 2 (restrictions around the crater) to 3 (mountain entry traffic control). Between January and September 2015, there were as many as 700 eruptions at the Showa Crater of Sakurajima, but none were on this scale, which is why the alert level has now been elevated to 3. Travelers planning to visit Kagoshima, Japan, in the near future are advised to pay special attention to local transportation and safety conditions.
