As cherry blossom season arrives, besides Japan and South Korea, Washington, D.C. in the United States is also a renowned destination for cherry blossom viewing. Around March and April each year, thousands of cherry trees stretch along the shores of the Tidal Basin southwest of the Washington Monument, bursting into full bloom with pink and white blossoms hanging from the branches. The swaying flowers create an overwhelmingly beautiful sight, attracting many tourists to come and admire them.

There are nearly 7,000 cherry trees in Washington, D.C. In 1912, the then Mayor of Tokyo, Yukio Ozaki, first gifted 3,000 cherry trees to Washington, hoping to promote friendly relations between the two cities. By 1965, Japan gifted another 3,800 cherry trees, making it so that every spring, the lake shores of Washington, D.C. are surrounded as if wrapped in a pink cherry blossom scarf. Most of these nearly 7,000 cherry trees are Yoshino cherry trees, but they are slightly different from the Yoshino cherries commonly seen in Taiwan. The Yoshino cherries in Washington are white with a touch of pink, appearing even more delicate and fresh under the sunlight.

The Yoshino cherry trees in Washington, D.C. are mainly concentrated around the Washington Monument, the National Mall, and the Tidal Basin. It is predicted that the peak blooming period for cherry blossoms in Washington, D.C. in 2016 will be between April 4 and 6, when the beautiful sight of brightly blooming pink cherry blossoms can be enjoyed.
