Cool weather is just right for a hot spring soak. The Guanziling Hot Spring area in Tainan is not only Taiwan’s only mud hot spring but also a century-old premium spring beloved since the Japanese colonial period. The Guanziling Hot Spring area has a history of over a hundred years since its development during the Japanese colonial period in 1898, and it boasts Taiwan’s only mud hot spring. The hot spring here is an alkaline carbonated spring, thick, smooth, and creamy in texture. According to a report on spring water composition by the Taiwan Governor-General’s Office during the Japanese colonial era, Guanziling Hot Spring contains the rare mineral radium. Historical records also praise it as the “No. 1 Spiritual Spring under Heaven,” known for its beauty-enhancing and health-promoting benefits. As a natural mud hot spring, it has been one of Taiwan’s renowned hot spring destinations since the Japanese colonial period. At that time, Governor-General Sakuma Samata came specifically to Guanziling for its healing springs when he fell ill, making Guanziling a widely celebrated century-old hot spring town.
