In winter, Hokkaido’s landscape turns a silver-white hue—a snowy scene many travelers long to see. At Shirasui Waterfall in the platinum hot spring area of Biei, Hokkaido, a nighttime illumination event is currently underway. The white waterfall, coupled with the natural decorations of surrounding ice mist and icicles, is quite dreamy, leaving visitors who see it deeply enchanted.

Shirasui Waterfall is located in the platinum hot spring area of Biei. It gets its name because the waterfall pours down from a rock crevice like strands of white beard. The water gushing from underground strikes the rocks, splashing with the blue gleam of the Biei River, creating a quite enchanting sight. During the winter illumination season, the cold mist, along with the frost and icicles nearby, combined with lighting effects, creates a fantastical view reminiscent of a watercolor painting. From now until March 27, it can be admired daily from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

Additionally, besides admiring the watercolor-painting-beautiful Shirasui Waterfall in the platinum hot spring area, don’t forget to experience the 100% free-flowing mixed-gender open-air hot spring. It is neither heated nor diluted, and the surrounding environment is well-maintained, so the hot spring site is also quite clean, allowing visitors to enjoy it with peace of mind.
