In June 2014, the Oigawa Railway in Shizuoka Prefecture launched Asia’s first-ever “Thomas the Tank Engine” steam train, attracting numerous tourists, railfans, and fans of the little tank engine to come and experience the ride, with all seats completely sold out. In 2016, the Thomas train made its return on June 11 and was scheduled to run until October 10, with a total of 174 runs. Reservations opened as early as March.

“Thomas the Tank Engine” is a British children's animated series that has enjoyed global fame since its television debut in 1980, known to both adults and children. In 2016, the Oigawa Railway’s “Thomas the Tank Engine” steam train ran from June 11 to October 10, operating between Shin-Kanaya and Senzu stations. Each journey lasted about 70 minutes, offering beautiful views of Shizuoka’s picturesque tea plantations along the way.
