The long-awaited Hokkaido Shinkansen has finally opened, reigniting the craze for rail travel. In recent years, towns across Japan have been competing to roll out creative sightseeing trains with various fun themes. Railways are no longer just about the scenery outside the windows—they’ve developed their own unique personalities. Each train becomes a journey’s theme, carrying the gentle beauty of Japan’s landscapes and offering a heartwarming, healing experience.

◎ Anpanman Train (アンパンマン列车)
The bright red, round-faced Anpanman brings joy to children everywhere. In Shikoku, you can hang out with Anpanman and explore its beautiful mountains and waters. There are a total of 21 painted trains, each featuring a different character design. The routes start from Okayama and cover almost the entire Shikoku region—Anpanman is with you wherever you go. In addition to the painted trains, JR Shikoku also offers open-air summer trains that cross the Seto Inland Sea. With flying Anpanman by your side, enjoy the sea breeze and stunning views of the Seto Inland Sea.

◎ Kitaro Train
Starting from Yonago in western Tottori Prefecture, the JR Sakai Line runs across the entire San’in Kaigan Peninsula, leading straight to Sakaiminato City, a trading fishing port in the San’in region. This line connects people with the world of yokai (Japanese monsters and spirits). Sakaiminato is the hometown of famed yokai artist Shigeru Mizuki, and local residents along with tourism officials have brought Mizuki’s yokai characters to life, creating an atmosphere that feels like the hometown of these mythical beings. The streets are lined with statues of yokai that greet visitors, drawing countless tourists to this small port town.

There are six series of Kitaro Trains, each featuring main characters such as Kitaro, Neko Musume, Nezumi Otoko, Medama Oyaji, Ittan Momen, and Sunakake Baba. Not only do the exteriors of the trains feature special designs, but the interiors are also adorned with illustrations of yokai characters from the Kitaro anime, turning your ride into more than just transport—it’s a fun-filled journey through iconic scenes.
