Following the runaway success of the High Heel Church in Budai, local authorities in Chiayi recently proposed building a “Diamond Church.” However, concerns have been raised about its planned location near a wetland and a bird migration route, sparking worries over potential ecological impacts and igniting debate.

In 2015, the Yunlin, Chiayi, and Tainan Management Office originally planned to build a “Diamond Church” with a diamond ring design next to the new field office at the Budai Salt Field. However, the proposed site was close to a wetland area and could have threatened migratory birds, leading to opposition from conservationists. As a result, priority was given to constructing the High Heel Church at Budai Seaview Park. Now that the High Heel Church has become a huge hit, generating buzz and business opportunities for the region—and even becoming an annual Instagram hotspot—the idea of the Diamond Church has resurfaced. Local legislators have expressed hope that the project can proceed with minimal development to balance tourism growth and ecological preservation.

The Yunlin, Chiayi, and Tainan Management Office stated that although there is interest in constructing the Diamond Church, it must not harm the wetland ecosystem and must have local cooperation. Therefore, until a location is finalized, any opposition from conservation groups will result in the plan being set aside. The office will respect local opinions and will not commence construction without reaching a consensus among all stakeholders.
