The powerful earthquake that struck Kumamoto on April 14 not only resulted in casualties but also disrupted JR Kyushu Shinkansen train services. The renowned tourist attraction and historic site, Kumamoto Castle, also sustained damage from the quake and has been closed to the public.

The parts of Kumamoto Castle affected by the earthquake include the partial collapse of roof tiles on the keep, as well as landslides in the stone walls surrounding the castle grounds. The earthen walls, which are designated as important cultural properties, have also suffered damage and peeling. The castle was closed on April 15, and future reopening will depend on announcements from the management. Even if the castle reopens to visitors, severely damaged areas will likely remain off-limits temporarily. Visitors should pay close attention to opening status updates and ensure their own safety.

Aftershocks following the earthquake are also a concern for Kumamoto Castle. As reports of casualties and damage from the Kumamoto earthquake continue to emerge, the tourism authority has announced that Taiwanese travelers in the area are unaffected. However, travelers planning to visit Kumamoto in the near future should continue to monitor local conditions, as well as the status of flights and transportation.
