Four Unique Hot Air Balloon Designs Unveiled for Taitung Hot Air Balloon Festival

The 2016 Taiwan International Hot Air Balloon Festival will be held from July 1 to August 7 at Luye Gaotai in Taitung. The organizers have unveiled the first four animal-shaped hot air balloons appearing in the first week: Lucky Cat, Aquarium, Panda, and Kiwi Bird. They have also launched a Facebook event inviting the public to help name them in Chinese.

This year’s Taiwan International Hot Air Balloon Festival will not only feature hot air balloon competitions—with a total of 30 balloons competing alongside pilots from 12 countries—but will also invite 15 uniquely shaped balloons from around the world. These include the Aquarium from the United States, the Kiwi Bird from New Zealand, Noah’s Ark, the Fox Balloon from Thailand, the Rooster Balloon from the Netherlands, and the Octopus and Carp Balloons from Japan, creating an “Animal Carnival” above Luye Gaotai.

The first week’s featured shaped balloons are the Lucky Cat (July 1–July 14), Aquarium (July 1–July 14), Panda (July 1–July 9), and Kiwi Bird (July 1–July 13). The organizers have started a Chinese naming campaign on their official Facebook page, calling on everyone to get creative and come up with catchy Chinese names for these balloons. The activity runs until noon on June 16, and winners will receive a small gift from the Taiwan International Hot Air Balloon Festival.
