Heads up before you go: 3 popular Tokyo attractions under renovation

With the peak summer travel season here, Tokyo — a favorite destination among Taiwanese travelers — boasts many renowned sights. But before you go, take note: major Tokyo-area attractions including Asakusa’s Senso-ji Temple, Meiji Shrine, and Kawagoe’s Toki no Kane are all under repair. Travelers planning to visit these spots should pay special attention.
 
● Senso-ji Temple[Updated] The Kaminarimon has been fully repaired, and scaffolding has been removed.

The famous Kaminarimon gate of Senso-ji Temple underwent emergency repairs due to fallen roof tiles. The entire area, including the gate’s lantern, has been closed off, and visitors must now enter the temple via a nearby passageway. Additionally, the temple’s Five-Story Pagoda was damaged in a previous earthquake and is currently under restoration, with work scheduled to finish by the end of June, though this depends on actual progress.

● Meiji Shrine
 
To commemorate its 100th anniversary in 2020, Meiji Shrine has begun a series of restoration projects. The main hall is currently under maintenance and enclosed by screens. Work may continue until 2020, so travelers planning a visit should stay informed.
 
● Kawagoe Toki no Kane (Time Bell Tower)
 
Kawagoe is a city rich in precious historical heritage. However, as most of its buildings are relatively old, the Toki no Kane is undergoing long-term seismic reinforcement to prevent earthquake damage. The project is expected to be completed by January 13, 2017.

In addition to these structures, the famed Studio Ghibli Museum and the One Piece exhibition at Tokyo Tower have also been temporarily closed for internal renovations. Before heading to these destinations, make sure to confirm their operating status to avoid disappointment upon arrival.
