Osaka to impose accommodation tax of up to 300 yen per night

Travelers planning to visit Osaka should take note: Osaka Prefecture plans to officially introduce an accommodation tax starting January 2017. For accommodations costing over 10,000 yenper night, a tax of 100 to 300 yenper nightwill be imposed. The expected annual revenue increase of 1.09 billion yen will be used to boost Japan’s tourism industry.

Osaka is the second region in Japan to introduce an accommodation tax, following Tokyo. Starting next January, taxes will be levied at 100 yen for accommodations costing between 10,000 and 15,000 yenper night, 200 yen for those between 15,000 and 20,000 yenper night, and 300 yen for those over 20,000 yen. Accommodations under 10,000 yen are exempt. The tax revenue will be used to improve the tourism environment, such as setting up tourist information centers at train stations.
