The sand in Kaohsiung is thick and vast—the Qijin Black Sand Art Festival has kicked off!

The highlight of Kaohsiung’s summer vacation, the “2016 Qijin Black Sand Art Festival,” grandly opened on July 2nd at the beach of Qijin Beach. This year’s event theme, “Kaohsiung Sand is Huge,” features a variety of sand sculptures, light shows, sand sculpture DIY workshops, beach volleyball, a starlit beach run, and rock concerts during the two-month summer break, inviting visitors to join in this southern Taiwan summer extravaganza.

The second edition of the “Qijin Black Sand Art Festival” took place from July 2nd to September 4th on the sandy shores of Qijin, where sand sculptors from around the world transformed Kaohsiung’s local features and beautiful scenery into black-sand artworks using Qijin’s dark sands. Don’t miss the nation’s first-ever night sand sculpture light show, offering a unique beachscape experience under the summer night sky.

In addition, this year features a variety of engaging fringe events, including the inflatable water play area “Happy Water World,” DIY sand sculpture experiences, beach volleyball tournaments, and the inaugural Qijin Starlit Beach Run, which debuted on August 27th. That same evening, a summer rock concert featuring popular group Wang Fu and local Kaohsiung band heated up the night.
