Historic Old Houses and New Attractions: The Past and Present of Tianmu White House

Once a dormitory for U.S. military personnel stationed in Taiwan, Tianmu White House is located at the entrance of Tianmu Park. It is the only remaining U.S. general’s residence in the Tianmu area. The white rain-shedding wooden siding on its exterior bears witness to the history of U.S.-China defense cooperation and stands as one of the landmarks of the Tianmu district, as well as a nostalgic memory for many locals. In 2005, it was designated as a municipal historic site by the Ministry of Culture. After renovation, it officially opened to the public on July 20.

Built in 1953 during the U.S. military presence in Taiwan, Tianmu White House is the only surviving structure from that period. Its white exterior showcases a blend of Japanese and Western architectural styles. Inside, there are fireplaces, sunlit rooms, and a historical corridor, while outdoors, there is a terrace and a large expanse of lush green lawn. Covering an area of several hundred square meters, it feels like an urban oasis.
