Traveling abroad happily, only to find your damaged suitcase on the baggage carousel upon return—such a moment can only be described as shocking. If you unfortunately encounter such an unexpected situation, don’t panic. Remember these three key steps for emergency handling to protect your rights.

1. React immediately

If you notice your suitcase is damaged, immediately report it to the airline’s ground staff. There are usually airline service counters near the baggage carousel area where they can inspect the damage right away and assist with repairs. If the damage is too severe to repair, compensation will be provided based on the depreciated value. If you discover the damage after leaving the airport, keep your boarding pass, baggage tag, and other documents, take photos of the damage as evidence, and contact the airline within the specified time limit (usually 7 days) for assistance.

2. Temporary suitcase

If the suitcase is too damaged to use, some airlines may provide a replacement to ensure your onward journey goes smoothly. These temporary suitcases do not need to be returned, but once you accept one, the airline will no longer compensate for the original damaged suitcase.

3. Lost luggage

If your luggage does not arrive after a long wait, immediately report it to airline ground staff and ask them to help locate it. Delays often occur due to mishandling during transfer. The airline will usually deliver the luggage to your designated address once it arrives. In the unfortunate event that the luggage is lost, the airline will negotiate a fair and limited compensation amount based on current international aviation regulations. However, for high-value items such as jewelry or designer bags, if you did not declare their higher value in advance, the airline will not provide compensation.
