A hundred butterfly species flutter gracefully in 28 hidden butterfly-watching spots

For nature enthusiasts, the hot summer is the perfect time to appreciate insects in the wild. Dubbed the "Butterfly Kingdom," Taiwan allows visitors to see butterflies dancing in the air throughout the year. On this small island, there are over 400 species of butterflies. The Agriculture Bureau has specially compiled a list of 28 butterfly-watching spots in New Taipei City, helping travelers plan their own butterfly-viewing journeys.

Out of the 419 butterfly species found across Taiwan, more than one-third can be seen within New Taipei City. Whether in urban areas, suburbs, or along roadsides, butterfly sightings are common. For example, over 60 species can be observed in Xinzhuang Youth Park; at Yongtong Temple in Zhonghe, you can spot Papilio hermosanus (Great Purple Cattleheart), Papilio polyctor (Common Mormon), and Vestalis smaragdina (Emerald Widow); while near the stream beds of Shiding’s mountain hiking trails, large groups of Graphium sarpedon butterflies gather.

The Agriculture Bureau also reminds visitors that most butterflies are active during the daytime, with the best viewing times being between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. When butterfly-watching in the summer, safety is key—visitors are advised to go in groups to avoid accidents. It's also important to respect the butterflies’ habitat: do not damage their environment, do not disturb them, and do not pick flowers randomly, so everyone can fully enjoy the joy of dancing with the butterflies.
