Estimated Japanese autumn foliage front helps plan your leaf-peeping trip in advance

The Japan Meteorological Agency usually releases its autumn foliage front forecast around October each year. This year’s forecast is already out, and based on climate conditions, the 2016 foliage front is expected to arrive about 10 days later than last year.

The regions where maple leaves turn red in Japan generally progress from north to south. The expected peak foliage seasons are as follows:

 

Tohoku region: mid-October to mid-November

Kanto region: mid-November to mid-December

Kansai region: mid-November to mid-December

Shikoku region: mid-November to mid-December

Kyushu region: late November to mid-December

 

 

The most popular cities for autumn foliage viewing in Japan are:

1. Kyoto Prefecture

2. Ishikawa Prefecture

3. Tokyo Metropolis
