Ocean Park Hong Kong's giant panda Jia Jia euthanized at the age of 38

After the passing of the popular koala Patrick, a beloved animal star at Taipei’s Muzha Zoo, the much-loved giant panda Jia Jia also passed away on October 16 at the remarkable age of 38. Jia Jia moved to Ocean Park Hong Kong in 1999. At 38 years old, she was equivalent to around 110 human years, and her age was recognized by the Guinness World Records as the oldest giant panda ever kept in captivity.

Ocean Park Hong Kong stated that giant panda Jia Jia had been in poor health recently, with her food intake dropping sharply from over 10 kilograms to about 3 kilograms, and her weight rapidly decreasing. She was too weak to do anything but lie down. Based on humanitarian grounds, veterinarians from the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department of Hong Kong and Ocean Park performed euthanasia on giant panda Jia Jia.
