Taipei 101 fireworks may be suspended—New Year's Eve plans uncertain

As 2017 approaches, one of the annual highlight events—the Taipei 101 fireworks show—has always been a major attraction of New Year’s Eve celebrations, with many people already discussing their plans for the big night. However, this year’s fireworks show has reportedly been put on hold due to the lack of payment for the NT$45 million budget so far, prompting a spokesperson for Taipei 101 to confirm that the board has discussed cancellation for the first time.

In previous years, the New Year’s Eve fireworks were sponsored by corporate sponsors, but this time, due to the involvement of Shu San-tai, head of sponsor Xizhi Technology, in a fraud case, the funds now have to be raised from businesses in the surrounding Xinyi District, leading to high costs.

However, they still hope the government can allocate funding for sponsorship; otherwise, hotels and restaurants in the Xinyi business district may lose out on the NT$1 billion worth of business opportunities generated by the New Year’s Eve fireworks.
