A line of people snakes out from the old tin shack. What’s everyone queuing for? This is Tainan’s Xinhua District’s “Yemaike Fried Chicken,” always packed during business hours and highly recommended by locals. It relocated from the Taisu Palace area of Xinhua District to Zhongxiao Road in the same district. The food stall and truck remain the same, but now there's a tin-roofed shelter to keep out the elements. Yemaike Fried Chicken offers unbeatable prices: chicken drumsticks for NT$30, chicken wings for NT$15, chicken nuggets for NT$20 each, and salt-and-pepper chicken for NT$30 per serving. It’s no wonder the place is mobbed every time it’s open.

Yemaike Fried Chicken’s menu includes drumsticks (NT$30 each), nuggets (NT$20 each), wings (NT$15 each), necks (NT$10 each), chicken tail vertebrae (NT$30 per skewer), squid balls (NT$20 per skewer), chicken tendons (NT$15 per skewer), salt-and-pepper chicken (NT$30 per serving), and sweet potatoes (NT$20 per serving). With such a huge crowd of customers, the owner keeps frying non-stop in the vat behind the stall, and the fried chicken piles up like a small mountain. Business hours are from 2:30 PM to 6:30 PM — just four hours a day — and lines get especially long on holidays.

Food critic Xu Tianlin, who’s experienced long queues for good eats, describes Yemaike Fried Chicken as super generous. Both the fried drumsticks and wings are excellent. The seasoning mix includes salt and pepper, five-spice powder, and plum powder — the flavors are a bit strong but pair perfectly with cola or beer. If you’re not into salty flavors, you might want to start with the plum-flavored sweet potato.
