Renovation of Old Dormitory Complex at Shan-Hua Sugar Refinery Offers a New Leisure Experience

Located in the wooden dormitory area of the Shan-Hua Sugar Refinery under Taiwan Sugar Corporation, the buildings were originally used to house employees. However, as the sugar industry declined, employees gradually moved out due to retirement and other reasons, leaving the entire dormitory area vacant for a long time. The old buildings also fell into disrepair. After renovating these aging dormitories, Taiwan Sugar Corporation leased them to private operators to create the “Shan-Tang Cultural Park.” Currently, overall environmental enhancements are underway, with the park scheduled to open in April. Upon launch, it will integrate dining, baking, and book kiosks, providing the public with a high-quality leisure space.

With Taiwan Sugar Corporation promoting sugar tourism in recent years, in addition to a sales outlet, a museum has been established around the Shan-Hua Sugar Refinery to showcase historical artifacts from the company. Coupled with the nearby Shan-Tang Elementary School and recreational parks, the area attracts many visitors on weekends, becoming a new highlight of tourism in the Shan-Hua region.

To elevate the quality of leisure and cultural offerings at the sugar refinery, Shan-Hua Sugar Refinery has renovated the old dormitories in the residential area, outsourcing the entire project to private operators. The operators are planning a cultural leisure park, introducing a variety of businesses such as coffee shops, bakeries, and book kiosks. Environmental enhancement works are now in full swing.

In line with the development of the Shan-Tang Cultural Park, Taiwan Sugar Corporation has provided an antique steam locomotive for on-site display, adding a strong nostalgic sugar-industry charm and becoming a new highlight of the park. Shan-Hua Sugar Refinery stated that the opening of the Shan-Tang Cultural Park will further support the transformation of the sugar refinery into a leisure and tourism destination. The park combines the lush, tree-lined surroundings of the refinery, offering a premium recreational space. For those seeking a “slow living” experience, it is an excellent choice.
