2017 Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival Shines Brightly During Lantern and Mid-Autumn Festivals

The Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival in New Taipei City, which has a century-long history, is a celebration held to mark the Lantern Festival. Each year around this time, it attracts over 100,000 visitors who come together to enjoy the spectacle, as thousands of lanterns rise slowly into the night sky, carrying everyone's wishes to the heavens. The brilliant red glow illuminates the sky in a dazzling display. The first major event of the 2017 New Taipei City Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival will take place on February 11th, which is the Lantern Festival. Another lantern festival event is scheduled for October 4th, during the Mid-Autumn Festival. A special extended promotional period has been arranged, integrating local business district marketing efforts to expand the tourism benefits.

The Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival was ranked by the international travel channel Discovery as the world’s second-largest festival carnival in 2008, selected by CNN as one of the 52 most worthwhile global events in 2013, listed by the world’s largest travel publisher Fodor's as one of the 14 must-experience classic festivals in a lifetime, and recommended by National Geographic in 2016 as one of the top ten best winter travel destinations globally. This shows that Taiwan’s Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival has long been an internationally acclaimed event, beloved by friends abroad.

On the day of the Lantern Festival event, free sky lantern release vouchers will be provided, distributed starting at 10:00 AM on the day of the event at the venue. In addition to the sky lantern activities, the Pingxi Business District also hosts a series of special events, including the Pingxi-Jingtong Sky Lantern All-in-One event on 2/4 (Saturday) and 2/5 (Sunday). Lantern releases are scheduled for 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM on the event days, featuring two waves of 88 lanterns each flying simultaneously along the Pingxi and Jingtong areas.
