Japan’s creativity shines in all kinds of things, and today we’re introducing how that creativity is being applied to food and desserts. Recently, Yamamasa Seika, a company based in Tokushima City, launched a unique dessert that has become one of Japan’s hottest topics. At first glance, it looks like an ice pop—but it doesn’t melt at room temperature. In reality, this ice-pop-like product is actually a stick of pounded rice cake (mochi bar). Made from the same glutinous rice used in daifuku, it comes in eight flavors including mugwort and kinako (roasted soybean flour). When it hit the market, some customers even mistook it for an ice pop—making it quite a special and delightful surprise.
