The Taipei Lantern Festival is a must-visit with ten top photo spots during the Spring Festival

In 2017, the Taipei Lantern Festival moved to the western district for the first time. More than just a traditional lantern-viewing event, the festival’s ten highlights promise a brand-new lantern experience—and it’s also a hot spot for photos during the Spring Festival holiday.

The ten highlights are as follows:
1. With the participation of over 10 artists and designers, this is truly an unprecedented initiative.
2. In Taipei’s western district, the event is organized by blocks, starting from the Beimen Gate at the origin of the Western District Gateway Project, along Zhonghua Road. Through various presentations of “lights,” the entire western district becomes a street theater.
3. Light Sculpture Zone: The Beimen Gate, liberated from the elevated highway, features a 3D architectural projection light sculpture show on the city gate, staging a “West Street Party.” Then, head to Zhongshan Hall, where a montage collage technique invites audiences to experience the 3D light sculpture projection of the “West City Grand Theater”!
The Egg Hunt Zone (Ultramarathon Interactive Area) at the front and back sides of Zhonghua Road invites the public to participate in interactive experiences such as running, swimming, table tennis, and billiards. You can even light the sacred flame together with Bear Hug, experiencing the Ultramarathon set to take place in Taipei in August through light and shadow.
4. Gashapon Zone (Ultramarathon Interactive Area): Located on both sides of Zhonghua Road, this area invites the public to participate in interactive experiences like running, swimming, table tennis, and billiards. You can even light the sacred flame together with Bear Hug, experiencing the Ultramarathon that will be held in Taipei in August through light and shadow.
5. Red Egg Zone: Located in front of the National Army Cultural Activities Center on Zhonghua Road, there are traditional lanterns featuring the “Five Virtues of the Chicken”—literature, martial arts, bravery, benevolence, and integrity—along with paper-cut art inspired by the word “home” (derived from the Taiwanese pronunciation of chicken, ㄍㄟ), making you feel as if you’ve stepped into a big red lantern.6. Egg Yolk Zone: Not far from the Red Egg Zone, across from the site of the West Gate Shrine, the historical charm is revived through a light ensemble, turning the area into an art gallery of light for the block.
7. Egg Hunt Zone: Ximending’s landmark, Ximen Red House, represents the district’s multiculturalism. Here, you’ll find the Wish Light Tree and the Egg Hunt Wall, where people can make wishes for love and faith and pray for themselves and their families.

8. Golden Egg Zone & Egg White Zone: The Golden Egg Zone, which exchanges with friendly cities and folk organizations like the Tianhou Temple, is located at the front end of Zhonghua Road near Beimen Gate and close to the main performance area. Meanwhile, the Egg White Zone, featuring student creations, surrounds Zhongshan Hall, and a lantern riddle competition will be held here.
9. West City Carnival Parade: Designed and executed by the Paper Windmill Theater Troupe, this carnival-style street parade will liven up the night of Ximending on the day of the Lantern Festival.

10. Mysterious Main Performance Area: The concept of this year’s “main lantern” is still under wraps, but we know it’s designed by Taiwan’s first internationally renowned anime aesthetics artist, Ikki Lin—definitely something to look forward to. The area will be centered around Exit 6 of Ximen Station, Ximen Red House, Hanzhong Street, and the intersection of Chengdu Street, all featuring must-see and must-photo spots.
