The strongest cold front this winter has caused temperatures to drop sharply across the country.

This morning (the 3rd), the lowest temperatures in northern Taiwan remained around 14 to 16 degrees Celsius, with very sporadic and light rainfall in the Greater Taipei mountainous areas and Yilan-Taitung mountainous regions. The latest simulation from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) model shows that winds near Taiwan will shift to easterly to southeasterly, bringing stable weather to the western half of the island. Daytime temperatures will rebound significantly, with highs reaching approximately 24 to 27 degrees Celsius and a diurnal temperature variation of up to 10 degrees. By next Thursday (the 9th), when a frontal system passes through, northern and eastern Taiwan will see rainy conditions, followed by the arrival of the strongest cold front of the winter, causing temperatures to plunge sharply across the country.

The latest simulation data shows that the cold air arriving on Friday and Saturday (the 10th and 11th) will be at cold surge levels. However, during this period, it could weaken to become a strong continental cold air mass or even intensify into a colder surge. Continued observation is needed. The public is advised to pay close attention to weather changes if planning travel next week, and to carry warm clothing.
